Network Status Reports

Jan 20, 2001

Server OS upgrade to 4.2. This should be one hour of downtime. Rescheduled for Jan 27.

Dec 14, 2000

NAP.net brought down their entire backbone and did maintenance work on it. Not sure what type of maintenance work as they did not say. They assured this would not happen in the future. Redundancy failed due to the way they brought down the network. The failover made it to the chicago router but wouldn't route anywhere else.

Dec 05, 2000

DDoS attack against the web server. Did not affect business operations; however, certain links from the web site were removed and secured under a different URL. I guess when you give everyone what they want, we have morons that want more or just dont give a rat about themselves or others so they do attacks.

Nov 30, 2000

Service Provider/Uplink fixed a bad t3 card in their router. Downtime was between 12am and 1am.

Sept 23 , 2000

New class C assigned. Renetworking of IP's, DNS to give customers more broadband usage for their needs. Please see motd on server for more information.

August 25, 2000

Added additional hard drive space, moved all scsi bound hard drives to a new case for cooling efficiency and splicing.

August 10-11 , 2000

Server(s) upgrades. FangZ will be updating the network cards and increasing security to its machine. Telnet will be closed on August 15 permanently, as you can use FreeSSH to login. As the servers are being upgraded you will notice a drop in connection, their will be a window of 5 minutes as the server is being rebooted or changed. Any concerns please email support@fangz.net

July 25, 2000

Due to the overwhelming abuse for sign-up requests from International countries, FangZ.net is no longer accepting sign-ups from countries outside of the United States or Canada. Unfortunately this will not be changed. If continued abuse will happen, FangZ will block all international IP traffic so forth set by ARIN. Allowed root's are .com, .edu, .org, .us, .net, .gov and .ca. Any mis-representation of reverse lookups will initiate a call to your service provider to have this matter resolved.

July 21, 2000

All domains have been updated with the following information:
Primary DNS:      209.242.2.251 - ns1.fangz.net
Secondary DNS:    64.34.108.87 - ns3.fangz.net
Backup mail server is also setup. Outgoing mail for FangZ.net should be smtp.fangz.net
Incoming should remain mail.fangz.net.

July 19, 2000

Domain: h34d.org was out of use to do a billing error by Network Solutions and myself. I have redid all domains that (FangZ.net) owns. All domains are now set correctly with correct zone contacts. All domains have also been updated with the secondary name server. See July 21 posting.

July 2, 2000

Blocked ip (secure.fangz.net) for being used as a address for user usage. This is for main server usage.

Servers (9:30pm) experienced a large denial of service attack. T3 went out of service and came back. IP Addresses were black-holed at core routers and also the Chicago FBI office contacted to also do a further investigation on this.

Jan 16/17, 2000

Firewall reconfigured and setup. Sorry for 'lockouts' you may have had while this was being initiated. Any issues regarding security should be emailed to abuse@fangz.net with logs/or requests.

Jan 15, 2000

Updated server to BSDI 4.1. Unfortunately I lost my 130 day uptime, but maintenance was due on it. As a note this system will be doing upgrades/maintenance every tri or quad quarter. This is to keep the server to the latest patch level. If no patches or updates are needed then that maintenance schedule will be skipped. Of course a notification of updates will be sent before performing upgrades.

eh, comstud (irc.concentric.net) seems he likes klining for invalid reasons and any point in arguing with him get a kline too.
Removed vhosts from page. Placing appropriate calls for the peon. Even his wife called the legal department, saying I was threatening him with pulling their contract. Invalid of course.

Sept 29, 1999

Moving Fangz to a different subnet with its own router. This will help `me' with routing issues. I intend to implement and fire walling a little easier on the main pipe. Implementation of this is with-in 30days. Standard DoS attacks are blocked at the uplink with access restrictions and load balancing.

July 27, 1999

BSA. I have closed FTP completely until further notice except ONLY to 3com and my home account. The BSA organization (bsa.org) has been causing me some problems. So now I have called Verio.net for delinking BSA and its now in their security department as of 09:00 CST. Harassment, Abuse, and their Spam WON'T be tolerated. They have not emailed back including the tech contact at that system nor their abuse team and no team and no phone calls back from BSA to me.

July 11, 1999

Box went down at 11:30 AM. ISP was re-wiring (did not know about it) and they tried to ping the box. Except they can not ping it, only authorized hosts. They gave me IP's of machines they use to test with this and they were added to the authorized list. Machine returned 9:00AM 7/12/99

July 3, 1999

napnet-gw.customer.alter.net had router problems, and was dropping 50% of the packets. Slow response but was not down.

June 1, 1999

Routing issues (box itself). Noticed that irc/bitchx clients can not grab the virtual ip's. Set mask to class B. Works fine. Reset class C address and working on issues with the virtual ip's not working with client software. Was resolved with adding a Ip to the main interface so routing was not going through the local interface. Plan to separate networks. (6/2/99)

May 29, 1999

Upgraded to BSDI 4.0.1 with all patches applied

May 26, 1999

SSH2 way to much work to setup security for other sites. Went back to SSH1.x for compatibility with other Unix hosts.

May 1, 1999

Added another subnet block for vhosting.

duh! irc opers love seeing posted vhosts. Removed vhosts and moved to another subnet.
When in doubt ask of availability.
April 16, 1999

Added mp3's for users to grab or listen to. (NOTE) This is not a ultra mp3 server. Its for private use. Misuse of it will force me to restrict it to local users only with login/password validation.
Site Url: ftp://ftp.fangz.net/pub/mp3

ISP lost power. Installed a backup UPS to hold server. Installed secondary Adaptec 2940U and also installed secondary Ethernet. Now lets see who's fighting for uptimes.

April 11, 1999

Made a boo boo, and crashed the server by loading xdm. Don't think I will be doing that anymore. Called ISP to reset box but no one was on call. 4/12/99 I called to have them reboot.

March 27, 1999

Upgraded server to PII 400. Added a 12G hard drive for more room to store files and separate partitions for reliability. Changed SDRAM to 100mhz. SCSI U2 built on the board.
